Lamentation de C. J. Sansom

Lamentation de C. J. Sansom

DESCRIPCIÓN Y/O SINOPSIS DE ESTE EBOOK

The eagerly anticipated new Shardlake novel from the number one bestselling author.

Summer, 1546.

King Henry VIII is slowly, painfully dying. His Protestant and Catholic councillors are engaged in a final and decisive power struggle; whoever wins will control the government of Henry’s successor, eight-year-old Prince Edward. As heretics are hunted across London, and the radical Protestant Anne Askew is burned at the stake, the Catholic party focus their attack on Henry’s sixth wife, Matthew Shardlake’s old mentor, Queen Catherine Parr.

Shardlake, still haunted by events aboard the warship Mary Rose the year before, is working on the Cotterstoke Will case, a savage dispute between rival siblings. Then, unexpectedly, he is summoned to Whitehall Palace and asked for help by his old patron, the now beleaguered and desperate Queen.

For Catherine Parr has a secret. She has written a confessional book, Lamentation of a Sinner, so radically Protestant that if it came to the King’s attention it could bring both her and her sympathizers crashing down. But, although the book was kept secret and hidden inside a locked chest in the Queen’s private chamber, it has – inexplicably – vanished. Only one page has been found, clutched in the hand of a murdered London printer.

Shardlake’s investigations take him on a trail that begins among the backstreet printshops of London but leads him and Jack Barak into the dark and labyrinthine world of the politics of the royal court; a world he had sworn never to enter again. Loyalty to the Queen will drive him into a swirl of intrigue inside Whitehall Palace, where Catholic enemies and Protestant friends can be equally dangerous, and the political opportunists, who will follow the wind wherever it blows, more dangerous than either.

The theft of Queen Catherine’s book proves to be connected to the terrible death of Anne Askew, while his involvement with the Cotterstoke litigants threatens to bring Shardlake himself to the stake.

Forever England de David Luddington

DESCRIPCIÓN Y/O SINOPSIS DE ESTE EBOOK

“…And there will be a corner of some foreign field that will be forever England.”

Only these days it’s more likely to be a half finished villa overlooking a championship golf course somewhere on one of The Costas.

Following an unfortunate encounter with Spanish gin measures and an enthusiastic estate agent, retired special effects engineer Terry England is the proud owner of a nearly completed villa in a new urbanisation in Southern Spain.

Not quite how he’d intended to spend his enforced early retirement Terry nevertheless tries to make the best of his new life. If only the local council can work out which house he’s actually bought and the leaf blowers would please stop.

Terry finds himself being sucked in to the English Expat community with their endless garden parties and quests for real bacon and Tetley’s Tea Bags. Of course, if it all gets too much he can always relax in the local English Bar with a nice pint of Guinness, a roast beef lunch and the Mail on Sunday.

With a growing feeling that he might have moved to the ‘Wrong Spain’, Terry sets out to explore and finds himself tangled in the affairs of a small rustic village in the Alpujarras. It is here where he finds a different Spain. A Spain of loves and passions, a Spain of new hopes and a simpler way of life. A place where a moped is an acceptable means of family transport and a place where if you let your guard down for just a moment this land will never let you go again.

Forever England is the tale of one man trying to redefine who he is and how he wants to live. It is a story of hope and humour with an array of eccentric characters and comic situations for which David Luddington is so well known and loved.

OPINIONES:

A great fun read
A man tries to take early retirement in Spain but gets tangled up with the expat community and their attempts to build a bit of England in the sun. Lots of funny characters and events as he tries to find the Real Spain. I found the scenes in the rural parts of Spain are particularly funny. This is very well written and although this is consistently funny it does touch on a more serious side as the author reveals glimpses of the financial troubles facing Spain.

Good but not great
Having seen this book highly praised in various reviews, I have to say I was somewhat disappointed, especially by the ending. I feel let down.

Good but not «the book»
Good book for a holiday read. Some unexpected twists. That is all. If zou are expecting «the book», well, keep on searching! 🙂

Gone girl (english version)
I really enjoy mysteries and detective stories and love it when they have a twist in the tail. I would recommend this book.

Any Human Heart de William Boyd

Any Human Heart de William Boyd

DESCRIPCIÓN Y/O SINOPSIS DE ESTE EBOOK

Any Human Heart is William’s Boyd’s classic, bestselling novel – now a major Channel 4 drama.

Every life is both ordinary and extraordinary, but Logan Mountstuart’s – lived from the beginning to the end of the twentieth century – contains more than its fair share of both. As a writer who finds inspiration with Hemingway in Paris and Virginia Woolf in London, as a spy recruited by Ian Fleming and betrayed in the war and as an art-dealer in ’60s New York, Logan mixes with the movers and shakers of his times. But as a son, friend, lover and husband, he makes the same mistakes we all do in our search for happiness. Here, then, is the story of a life lived to the full – and a journey deep into a very human heart.

Any Human Heart will be enjoyed by readers of Sebastian Faulks, Nick Hornby and Hilary Mantel, as well as lovers of the finest British and historical fiction around the world. It was recently adapted for a major Channel 4 four-part drama series scripted by William Boyd and starring Kim Cattrall, Gillian Anderson, Jim Broadbent and Tom Hollander.

OPINIONES:

Boyd is one of the world’s greatest living story teller
Once again William Boyd has produced a jewel. His ability to bring true history into a novel is totally unmatched. But even Boyd has outdone his last few publications with «Any Human Heart,» not since «Brazzaville Beach» has he written such a page turner. This book flows effortlessly from cracking good tale to tragic reflection. His creation of this heroic character Logan Mountstuart left me crying at certain points in the book, and I can assure you I have never done that while reading a book before. Boyd uses a diary as a vehicle to detail the facts and emotions of Logan’s life, and this adds to the drama, suspense and pain of his story.
If you have the time and you are looking for a summer assignment, go to the book store and purchase William Boyd’s library. Read them in any order you like. But if you are looking for one excellent example of this writer’s genius, then Any Human Heart is a great place to start. I cannot recommend any book more highly.

Culmination of Boyd’s awesome career
This novel is so brilliant, so swiftly paced and poetically composed, i can hardly do it justice. i have read (and taught in university courses) Boyd’s books over and over again down the years (a fav is The New Confessions) and Any Human Heart rates right up there with the best work he’s done. there’s a real melancholia evident here–so those who are looking for the hilarity of such early works as A Good Man in Africa or On the Yankee Station are gonna be puzzled a tad. Logan Mountstuart is a great creation…so pleased, especially as i didn’t like Armadillo and The Blue Afternoon–despite the fact that, with Ian McEwan, Wm Boyd is my favorite contemporary novelist. get this as soon as you can…

Intermittently brilliant, but overall a mixed bag
A good, sometimes brilliant, effort by William Boyd: a fictional diary spanning the bulk of the 20th centry «written» by a minor British literary figure. I found sections of this novel extremely compelling: the World War Two diaries, the New York diary, and parts of the diaries devoted to his life and education at Oxford in the 1920s. Other sections I found rather ponderous, particularly the latter sections set in Nigeria and France. Since this book is structured in the form of a diary, it lacks the forward narrative drive of a good novel. This isn’t necessarily problematic but, to this reader anyway, the book drags toward the end where a novel should be building to its dramatic peak. Still, however, Boyd succeeds in conveying the sense of disillusionment and sadness of growing old and wondering «is that all there is?»
Perhaps Boyd’s greatest success here is the way he manages to recreate time and place. These «diaries» feel very real and each page comes alive with authenticity.
If you’re looking for an introduction to William Boyd, better start with an earlier novel of his «The Ice Cream War.» For all its merits, «Any Human Heart» is an acquired taste. It requires patience in long stretches, but overall, the effort does reap some rewards.

A Place Of Strangers de Geoffrey Seed

DESCRIPCIÓN Y/O SINOPSIS DE ESTE EBOOK

When a successful TV journalist returns for Christmas to the decaying Tudor mansion where his step-parents live something is not right. Approaching death, they are reserved and enigmatic, as if they are determined to take one last secret with them to the grave.

He suspects that they have lied to him about who his real parents were – and what happened to them.

And so begins an investigation that will reveal his past – and determine his future.

As he digs deeper, he starts to uncover a terrifying conspiracy – one of murder and revenge, with its roots in the greatest crime in history, the Holocaust.

Inspired by a story Geoffrey Seed investigated as a journalist, ‘A Place of Strangers’ is a stunning, literary thriller that combines history and suspense. It will appeal to followers of writers such as Robert Harris, Alan Furst and Alan Judd.

«Intelligent, seamless and satisfyingly complex with a whiff of Le Carré.» – Patrick Malahide.

Geoffrey Seed is a journalist who worked for the Daily Mail and then specialised in producing major TV investigations for programmes such as World In Action and Panorama. ‘A Place of Strangers’ is his first novel.

OPINIONES:

An unexpected pleasure
I’m not usually one for spy novels or any type of mystery/terrorist story, being more of a romance type of gal. However, on the advice of a friend I bought this book, hoping it would hold my interest. From the first page I was hooked. This book had a storyline that flowed beautifully but was easy to understand. In fact, it was so well written that I read it very slowly, savoring each word, hoping it would take a long time to end. Without giving away any of the plot, it is a story about one man’s search for the truth about his own origins, which takes him from England to Canada and Palestine — and also into his past. The Holocaust is described with painful precision and for those who have lost loved ones, your heart will ache. Mr. Seed is a brilliant writer and A PLACE OF STRANGERS is a book I will long remember. I highly recommend it.

A Place of Strangers
There are lots of pretenders to John le Carre’s place as the king of classy thriller writers – Henry Porter, Charles Cumming, and Robert Harris to name but three.
Geoffrey Seed, a former TV journalist, is another contender, however, with this gripping story of a step-son investigating his real parents lives and coming across some very nasty stuff left over from the Holocaust. The story bowls along at great place, and Seed had a very strong grasp of atmosphere and character. There are some moments where the grip of the plot is genuinely icy – but a few as well where it flags slightly and the descriptions become slightly overdone. Even so, this is an excellent read, and will keep most thriller fans happy enough – at least until the next Le Carre is out.

A Slow Pace
Now quite elderly; Francis has Alzheimer’s. McCall was told very little about his birth parents–it seems that it was considered better to not distress a child with an unhappy truth–but now he’s 40 and wants to know before his adoptive parents pass on.
They are reluctant to tell him, though. As a journalist, McCall starts digging to discover his own past and in the process discovers secrets of his parents and the horrors of the extermination of Jews in Nazi Germany.
The story line jumps back and forth between the present and the past, often from one paragraph to the next, with no segue whatsoever. The past is told in present tense, the present is in past tense. Excerpts from documents (such as letters)are given without quotation marks, which adds confusion. The main characters all sound alike and dialogue has no indicators such as ‘he said’; they are just one after another. All of this makes the book hard to follow.
The pacing is very slow. The ending was anti-climactic, as far as the solution to both mysteries, with a sudden surprise twist that was annoying, in my opinion.

Desert God de Wilbur Smith

DESCRIPCIÓN Y/O SINOPSIS DE ESTE EBOOK

Ex-slave. Philosopher. Chosen one.

Taita has risen from nothing to become the most trusted man at the Pharaoh’s side. Only he can plot a mission that will return Egypt to its former glory. Only he can muster the force that can break the back of Egypt’s greatest enemy.

Across the lush plains of Egypt, Taita, the eunuch slave whose freedom is long since won, now stands as a unique advisor to the Pharaoh. He is confidant, strategist poet and a father figure to the Pharaoh’s teenage sisters, Tehuti and Bekatha.

Southern Egypt has an enemy it cannot shake for too long: they have been fighting the Hyksos people in the north since time began. And to finally crush them the Pharaoh must turn to his most trusted friend. Taita has an ingenious plan that will see Egypt destroy the Hyksos army and form the coveted alliance with Crete. This plan will take him, his expedition commander Zaras, and a team of warriors on an epic journey up the Nile, through Arabia to Sidon and the magical city of Babylon, and across the open seas to Crete.

They will meet battle and betrayal on their journey but Taita must also contend with his charges, the spirited young princesses, Tehuti and Bekatha, whose respective love for warriors Zaras and Hui, threaten Taita’s plan to use them as offerings in his alliance with Crete, and the future of Egypt itself.

OPINIONES:

A «You Are There» Novel That Draws You In!
Set in what historically is called the Second Intermediate Period of Ancient Egyptian history, Wilbur Smith brings to life in his newest novel Desert God, the struggle between a defeated Egypt and their foreign invaders, the Hyksos. Through the eyes and life of a wise and cunning Egyptian eunuch named Taita who seeks to gain an alliance with the Cretians and the Sumarians for the purpose of driving them out of Egypt and restoring Pharoah Tamose as the ruler of a united Egypt, Smith takes us on a colorful, tense (and intense), at times graphic, and highly detailed journey into that ancient world.
With strong character development in the both the main characters of Taita, the two royal princesses Tehuti and Bekatha, and the supporting cast and combined with a significant attention to detail across a variety of settings and situations, Desert God drew me in and kept me reading as the plot unfolded. As it did, I found myself thoroughly immersed in the journey as I felt as if I was walking and riding alongside Taita on the Mediterranean Sea as they raided their Hyksos enemies, approached the forbidding island of Crete, and ambushed the Hyksos on the coast near the town of Sidon (located in modern day Lebanon). Additionally, Smith’s detail descriptions of military uniforms, tactics, and weapons alongside the topographic detail add a depth to the narrative and a level of realism that good historical fiction includes.
I thoroughly enjoyed Wilbur Smith’s Desert God. I look forward to reading more of Smith’s books!

Taita Should Have Been Left Beside the Blue Nile
As a longtime fan of Wilbur Smith’s Taita character from River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt and The Seventh Scroll (A Novel of Ancient Egypt), (both of which I have read numerous times) I couldn’t wait to read Desert God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt. I must confess that I find myself disappointed.
Frankly, Smith seems to have lost the plot. Rather than the beautifully drawn word pictures that transport the reader straight to This Very Egypt and the brilliant genius that is Taita, I found Desert God colorless, peopled with entirely flat nonentities and a Taita that cannot begin to measure up to the Taita of old. Worse, those word pictures that plunged the reader straight into the Egypt of 2000 BC, with all of the sights, sounds, and smells, are entirely missing.
Grandma’s $0.02 – All good things come to an end. Better that Taita should have been left beside the Blue Nile where we last saw him.

Overall a good read!
I’ve read a number of Wilbur Smith books over the years. Some I loved (Cry Wolf) and some I hated (Shout at the Devil). But for the most part I have found his stories interesting and in some cases spellbinding. With Desert God I found a story that was intriguing with interesting characters and wonderful plot twists but with one annoying trait.
The story is historical fiction based in ancient Egypt. When I picked up the book I was unaware that this was a follow up to River God: A Novel of Ancient Egypt (Novels of Ancient Egypt). I had not read that book but since Desert God is more of the «continuing adventures of Taita» story instead of an actual sequel the book does stand on it’s own. No need to read the first one as the author brings you up to speed pretty quickly. Taita is a former slave who has become an important counselor to Pharoah and respected figure throughout Southern Egypt. His instincts are always spot on and he has the ability to manipulate people.
What I liked the most about the story is the character development as well as the continued excitement as Taita travels the known world. Each character is wonderfully described and developed. It does help to make this a page turner as the author takes us deeper and deeper into all the intrigue and viciousness this period could offer.
However I’m usually not a big fan of novels written in the First Person perspective. I prefer to be outside looking in, if that makes sense. What I have found with First Person style novels is there tends to be too much self-justification and egomania with the main character. No matter what they do it’s always justified, no matter who it hurts. Desert God takes that to a new level as everything Taita says and does is perfect and you know this because he tells you over and over again. He brags about himself incessantly. One example from page 77: «Even after all these years I was able to recall the precise dimensions of Mamose’s funeral barge. My memory is infallible. I never forget a fact, a figure, or a face.» That particular quote stood out to me because it was at that time I started to get annoyed with Taita’s constant matter-of-fact boasts. Seriously it’s almost every page.
But if you are able to get over the egomania that is Taita this is a very good read. Well written with vivid characters and wonderfully described scenery. I would definitely recommend it for Wilbur Smith fans and to those who love the First Person perspective.
