How Google Works de Eric Schmidt

DESCRIPCIÓN Y/O SINOPSIS DE ESTE EBOOK

Both Eric Schmidt and Jonathan Rosenberg came to Google as seasoned Silicon Valley business executives, but over the course of a decade they came to see the wisdom in Coach John Wooden’s observation that ‘it’s what you learn after you know it all that counts’. As they helped grow Google from a young start-up to a global icon, they relearned everything they knew about management. How Google Works is the sum of those experiences distilled into a fun, easy-to-read primer on corporate culture, strategy, talent, decision-making, communication, innovation, and dealing with disruption.

The authors explain how the confluence of three seismic changes – the internet, mobile, and cloud computing – has shifted the balance of power from companies to consumers. The companies that will thrive in this ever-changing landscape will be the ones that create superior products and attract a new breed of multifaceted employees whom the authors dub ‘smart creatives’. The management maxims (‘Consensus requires dissension’, ‘Exile knaves but fight for divas’, ‘Think 10X, not 10%’) are illustrated with previously unreported anecdotes from Google’s corporate history.

‘Back in 2010, Eric and I created an internal class for Google managers,’ says Rosenberg. ‘The class slides all read ‘Google confidential’ until an employee suggested we uphold the spirit of openness and share them with the world. This book codifies the recipe for our secret sauce: how Google innovates and how it empowers employees to succeed.’

This is the definitive book for leaders/entrepreneurs who want to learn about managing in the «information economy». I worked at Google from 2003-09 and was lucky to see first hand how Google works. It remains the most important professional experience of my 23 year career in Silicon Valley. While there has been a lot written about Google’s products, strategy and «moonshot» ambitions, this is the first authoritative account of how Google created the modern organization suitable for the 21st century information economy. In today’s age, with over 3 billion people who have a computer of some sort at their disposal, every company in the world – and not just Google – is essentially an information company. In this book, Eric & Jonathan outline the specific, intentional steps that Google took to create an organization that has a chance to survive and thrive for another 100 years. They cover everything from hiring, goal setting, motivating, competing, and most of all mentoring. Want to know how OKRs, snippets and no formal product plans led to one of the most admired organization in the world today? Then read this book – I can testify that this is exactly how Google worked when I was there …

This book FINALLY brings hiring into the 21st century! …
This book FINALLY brings hiring into the 21st century! It describes a variety of worker types and the suitability of each for various tasks in a wired/wireless world! Importantly, it emphasizes the type of employee – creative, innovative, passionate – that the tech world will increasingly demand in the years ahead (and, unfortunately, the types of workers that will be displaced as we move into this brave new world). The Google way of management may not work for every type of organization, but it sure explains how Google has grown and become THE place to work among the 20 and 30 year old educated, tech-savvy dreamers of the world. As an economist, I learned a tremendous amount about the internal sustainability of the Google model – which depends ultimately on hiring the «right» person and investing specific human capital as needed. BRAVO to authors Schmidt and Rosenberg for writing this engaging, unpretentious and often humorous book!

#smartcreatives, #moonshots and the Google Revolution
I’m a 4 year Googler and people ask me all the time what it’s like to work here. It’s been so hard to explain the culture, insight and magic that makes Google… GOOGLE, but Eric and JR’s new book, «How Google Works» captures it perfectly. It’s not only HOW we do things but WHY we make certain decisions, WHO the types of people we hire are and what technology shifts are leading the next evolution of Google’s future. I’m clearly biased but as someone who as previously worked at Nike, Nickelodeon and a couple of startups, Google is truly a unique and magical place. Whether you’re a senior executive leading your organization into the future or a college grad preparing for a career in the 21st century, How Google Works is a fun and insightful read.
